Wind Mitigation Inspections
A wind mitigation inspection documents construction features that help a home resist hurricane winds. Insurers may consider this information when calculating your windstorm premium.
Features documented on the uniform mitigation form
Building code & roof covering
Permit dates and roof covering type that indicate which building code applied.
Roof deck attachment
How the roof decking is fastened to the roof framing, verified in the attic where accessible.
Roof-to-wall attachment
Toe nails, clips, single wraps, double wraps, or other connections where visible.
Roof geometry
Hip, gable, or flat roof shape, which affects wind resistance.
Secondary water resistance
Whether a sealed roof deck or approved underlayment is present and documentable.
Opening protection
Impact-rated windows, doors, garage doors, and shutters, with product documentation where available.
How this differs from a full home inspection
A wind mitigation inspection records specific construction features on a standardized state form. It does not evaluate the overall condition of the home, its systems, or whether anything needs repair. If you are buying a home and want to understand its condition, a full home inspection is a separate service.

Common questions
Will a wind mitigation inspection lower my insurance?
It may. Florida insurers are required to offer discounts for qualifying mitigation features, but the amount depends on your home's features and your carrier. The inspection documents what is present; the insurer decides what credit applies.
How long is a wind mitigation report good for?
Under Florida rules, the uniform mitigation form is generally accepted for up to five years, provided no material changes have been made to the home. Your insurer can confirm its specific policy.
Do I need attic access?
Yes. Several items, such as roof deck attachment and roof-to-wall connections, are verified in the attic. Please make sure the attic hatch is reachable.
